8.9, he needs a mouth. Helmet needs a brim on it. It also needs a watermark. Even though it's under copyright, people will still steal it. Probably not from this forum, but you never know a few months down the road when someone will say, "oh, cool, nice soldier..."
I'm sticking with previous one mate. Just wanna see how people rate the quality of this work. Being very honest is good here cause I need to know what he has to work on. (this is a different designer)
I pass on rating but here are a few things you could do with that character ....
Let's start at the bottom. -- The boots should not end with a straight line as there needs to be a grip. -- The laces need to be in x shape as in the real world (even if you don't go for that look, the subconscious mind will still pick that up). -- The pants need pockets (as any uniform has) plus, the character looks weak -- The shirt pockets (or bullet proof west) look like an email icon That shirt/west and helmet would look better in gray ... missing belt loops ... etc
Basically, if you want to make a killer solder figure for your app, google "Landis Fields Air Man" Here's the link for you: http://www.landisfields.com/cg.htm
Click on the little icon (center of page) to open a larger image and .... be amazed for this is the work of a real master
The good news is that your character is easy to fix. I love the eyes!
And while you are at it, give him a rank? Sargent or something like that.
i would give it 4.. it is a nice base but would need work - it is too flat, needs more shading - it has some shadows but they look wrong.. needs mouth.. and it would look nicer with a little bit of line width variation, like, lien starts thin and then thickens..
If this is your own work then it is definitely a step in the right direction. I know from your posts that you have been looking for graphic work from other people. Personally I don't like this particular figure, but you have created a character which a lot of people are not capable of doing; you should be pleased. It's obvious that you mirror flipped the best half of your drawing (it's symmetrical) which can detract from it's expressiveness and character personality, although this would be less apparent at a smaller scale. This kind of artwork is not exactly my area, but I would encourage you to pursue your own work, rather than hiring others to design it… and it would save you a few quid too.
If this is hired work, then sack him- your own work has more character.
Hope this makes sense- if it's your own work you have got technically better, but lost character.
btw.. post smaller versions of characters, something similar to what you'll have on screen.. what looks like a perfect drawing might not work on 128px tall character.. and what looks like a 5/10 drawing might work just fine at that scale..
Oh ok. Thanks guys GREAT feedback! He just put this together for a demo for me (no its not mine lol) But he's a young dude and he's getting better all the time. This feed back is very important cause it gives him something to work on Thanks all! "AIRMAN" was a hobby project started by Landis Fields, an EXTREMELY talented guy who back in 2003 was, just like you now, new to creating artwork. He had plans to make a short film (3D animation) and his main character was a little soldier which he named "Airman".
When I saw the drawing you posted, it reminded me of Landis's project so I posted you a link which, when you check it out should have inspired you to experiment more on your character. Airman, unfortunately, never got finished because Pixar? contacted him and the rest is history!
Ohhhh.... Thanks mate. I clicked the link but didn't notice that :S. . . . ----------------------------------------------------- Join the GameSalad Community and have your game noticed for free. http://www.facebook.com/ListYourTopiPhoneGame List your Top iPhone Game on FaceBook!
Brian: Here is a good example of what linework should be like.. i dont mean like that - comicbook style, but here are good examples of line thickness importance, overlaping volumes with thinning lines etc..

So with mouth and brim you'd give it a 10??? Is it really that good :O

That's just my opinion though..

Pixar is to 3D what EA is to games.
I clicked the link but didn't notice that :S.
