Hi there,

Im thinking about making a platformer game for ipad and mac store. I would like to sell my game for 2-3 dollars. Now how much gameplay should this game have. IM thinking 30 levels with roughly 30 minutes of game play.

Is this game over valued or under valued?

Depends about polish and quality of levels.

    Cheers.

Yup your math means each level will only take 60 seconds to complete?!! if its too short you will get poor reviews.

Which is an interesting phenomenon isn't it? People expect you to give them the world and then some for $0.99 - 1.99 which puts a lot of burden and risk onto the developers.

BioShock 2 was only like 10 hours long and was $60, that's $6 per hour. The latest COD game is only about that long too. Imagine if you tried to charge $6 for your 1 hour iPhone game! haha

Ah, what a world we live in!

In all honestly you can compare an AA title with any iphone game! Sure the iphone game will be of a high standard but nothing on a game like BioShock. Most iphone apps I own I play only a few times while a game such as gears of war 1/2/3 beta I can play for days with ease! Just my personal opinion but I do agree the .99 price is ludicrous and hard on developers.

    Cheers.

my current game has 100 levels, and each one takes about 1-3 minutes to complete depending on how quick you can figure it out. I think it should be plenty long enough.

I'm just comparing it from a raw dollar-per-hour of gameplay perspective. Surely there is not comparing a AAA game with casual iPhone games, the develop cost disparity is huge. I'm just saying that people expect a lot for a dollar, but at the same time allow AAA developers to get away with providing them shorter-per-dollar experiences.

Oh i agree certain games on these platforms can be a waste of £40 but that is like any platformer especially iphone! I agree with what your getting at though :)

Thanks for the replies everybody :)

If I made the game about an hour long to play and make the levels polished.

When I mean levels take 60 seconds I mean a speed run. Realistically it would take more than 60 seconds. I do want to sell this game, if people could give me some pointers on what the ipad consumer expects let me know. Plus Im also thinking about just releasing this for ipad because of the nature of the graphics (HD and awesome).

    Thanks again :)

well, the first place to start is: would you buy this game for what you are selling it for? do you think it's a good value? Do you think you would be disappointed?

I always go by that assumption but in the past reviews have said the opposite what I think. Personally for 2.00 on the Ipad 1 hour of gameplay + really nice looking graphics and satisfying gameplay should be enough to warrant that price. Anybody disagree? :)

You are talking about platform games. What about endless arcade-style like DoodleJump? I think it could be difficult to ask more than 0.99 for those.
