Directional player animation

I'm trying to create an isometric type of game, and need my character to animate based on direction. I'm using a D Pad to move. Based on this tutorial (http://gamesalad.com/wiki/how_tos:gsc_animate_direction) I am able to create perfect animation from East to West

The problem is when I add in North/South movement, as because the player is'nt moving perfectly in either an X or Y plane, the animation is choppy (alternating from North to East, or South to West)

I have tried adding various rules to try an emulate states, and such, nothing has really worked particularly well.

Any help would be appreciated.
