Advanced Jump Controls?

What's a good jumping mechanic for a platform game?

The methods i've tried get effected when he jumps on an angle rather then up.
So if he's in mid jump and I press left or right he doesn't fall as fast as he should and kinda walks in the air.

    I have an accelerate set at 1000 on the character down to simulate gravity and create a rule, if space key (depends how you want to make him jump) is down and self.linear.y = 0 change attribute self.linear.y to 750.

    Fiddle with the 1000 and the 750 to find the best values for you.

    That is similar to what I am currently doing as well but with more like 1800 gravity. He still gets affected when jumping on an angle though...sort of throws the character out of his position and since the camera can't be moved further to the left then the mid-point, it sort of messes things up for me too, so any advice would be appreciated here too :)
