GS Default Converter

I was told that if you put other formats other than .PNG into your project. That the GS editor/engine will convert them to .PNG. And also do the same with the audio. Does anyone know the default setting GS uses? What if all my images are already .PNG and .MP3. What if I have already optimized the Images and Audio Files? Will GS engine change them. Or will GS ignore them because they are already png and mp3. Or will they actually make my files larger than I previously had them? Example: M audio files are saved in MP3 64 will GS make them Mp3 128.

Whats the default converter setting in the GS engine? For PNG and Audio.

All images are converted to .png, and the audio accepted without conversion is .ogg and .m4a. If you can help it, it's best to have them set up so that GS doesn't do any conversions for you when you import.

For audio it's best to use 22Hz for performance reasons, but it can take 44Hz, maybe even higher, I never tried, personally.

The audio quality is worse if GS converts them for you. Better to use Audacity (open source and free) to convert to .ogg

Yes indeed. it will ask you what you want to import it as, a sound or as a music file. .ogg is used for the sound option, and .m4a is used for the music option.

I always dither my own audio and sound effects but I just imported a 5.7 MB 128 Bit-rate MP3 file into GS to see what the results were.

It does a direct m4a conversion (still 5.7 MB) and when I extracted the audio from the GS file and A-B'd it on my studio monitors there seems to be a slight downgrade in audio quality, there seems to be a mid-range dip and audible digital distortion.

I ran the same files through my iPad speakers and there was a lot less audible difference between the two files although the distortion is still there.

Basically the GS algorithm doesn't compress the file in size but makes it sound crappy with no positive effects.

If there was a huge file size difference, it'd be worth-while getting a loss in quality, using a dedicated DAW or converter would be a hell of a lot better.

I thought MP3 was the gs norm. I use audacity. I didnt know .ogg was a format to choose. Ill do that instead
