Accelerometer Help

Hi. I'm trying to use the accelerometer to control the movement of my actor up and down. Problem is I want the iPod to be facing the user. So the back isn't visible and the screen is facing your face not like it's flat. When I do what's in the tutorial it works but only when it's flat. How can I make it so the accelerometer works when the screen is facing my face. Also is there a way to make the movement a little less choppy?
