Apparently, the April Fools joke is coming true...

http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/retro-gaming/e762

The page states this...
API to be released allowing any iOS developer to create iCADE-compatible games.
Maybe GameSalad should team up with them too.

argh... i actually had it working when paired as a bluetooth keyboard to the mac, but the runtime is blocking keyboard keys when built on the ipad. booo..... any workaround to this?

Just cause its old does not mean there can't be a discussion on it.
So if i make a new thread the exact same, people can post on it then ?

No, people can still post on relevant threads.

    ICade uses Bluetooth keyboard commands.

Gamesalad does not have any Bluetooth functionality built in.

then how come direct connect ipad keyboard doesn't work with icade on ipad for keydown events?

    it blocks all keys...
  • chumsizechumsize Member Posts: 10
has nothing to do with bluetooth. all GS has to do is stop blocking keys and iOS will do the rest. check actual code of the icade sdk - nothing in there for bluetooth. its reading the keyboard. to test my findings on this, I connected the direct-connect keyboard to my ipad and sent same keys as icade to the app and it still ignored them.

I might be wrong, of course... don't know the GS code. but virtually every other app I've tried that accepts keyboard input (mail, notes, etc) will think the icade is no different than that direct connect keyboard because disambiguation between type of key input device occurs at a layer below the api. right?

Anyway, sorry for stirring this up. I'll let it die now. Cripes. I bumped an old post, so I should be horse-whipped.

read any of the docs or dev guides about icade. when connected icade syncs to the device threw bluetooth like a bluetooth keyboard does. You need bluetooth.

OK... then riddle me this: Why was I just able to enter characters into a GameSalad app's "Keyboard Input" behavior screen using an iCade on an IPAD2? ( I'll post a video of my doing this if you don't believe me. ) Because that behavior doesn't mask out keyboard events. But all Rule-on-Actor-receives-event behaviors are masking them out. iOS device layer handles bluetooth... y'all don't need to! And yes I read the docs... I looked at the Obj-C code to confirm my suspicions. System handles syncing. App just looks at keys.

Maybe I'll shoot on down to Austin and show you how to do this gratis. Because iCade support could sell a crapload more of the game i'm about to put out. I'll drop the cash on the super-duper membership in a heartbeat too.

iCade would be cool. I also think implementing the Ringbow (I know stupid name) API would be cool as well. See below link.
