Hey GameSalad, why isn't the GameSalad Viewer on the iTunes App Store?

PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
I think this is another opportunity for a GameSalad community rally.

Do you hate updating the GameSalad viewer? Do you hate having to use Xcode to get the GameSalad viewer working? What if the viewer was on the App Store? Wouldn't that be easier? Developers wouldn't forget to update the viewer, as it could be done for them almost automatically.

And most importantly, this would be free a way for GameSalad to market their software. With thousands of active members, such a utility could be highly ranked on the iTunes App Store.

So, if you're interested in finding out an answer to this question, keep discussing this matter until an informative yellow post appears. :)

I really really want it to happen. I got developer account two days ago. And still haven't seen my game on iDevice. Cose there is a lot of problems that needs to be solve. Including this http://gamesalad.com/forums/topic.php?id=13218 and i don't like the solution in that tread.

Apple will not let them. It would be a mass way to bypass the app store to put games on the devices. That's direct from talking with Yodapollo a couple of months ago at one of their Austin events.

And if you don't like that thread, think about this...

The viewer has to be updated each time a new release comes out. mean app store approval for each release. which means releases will have to be delayed for apple. Next. The viewer is also in beta and apple doesn't allow beta stuff on the app store. maybe it's a plan for 1.0 and on.

I was going to say this but then remembered it was for Mac App Store that didn't allow Beta, although it may be through all the app store's too.

Apple approved similar app for Game Editor.

Not the issue. Apple won't let them unless they take out the feature that saves the game once its been streamed. It would be a mass way to put apps/games onto a iphone or ipad without jailbreak and bypassing the app store. People then could sell their project directly to others non-developers.

A little off subject, but If I was GS and really had the HTML thing inline, I would through the Accelerator program (i.e. only accept good games) and have an HTML subscription service where you could play any game on an accellerator/gs website for a monthly cost. Then kick back some of the money to the developers. Of course the limit on this is users would have to use their data plans or wifi.

That is interesting that they allowed it. but honestly I think its more the beta issue than anything. maybe they used to not allow for the playing games without the app store. but I bet the main issue not is beta.

Looks like that might be the case. Wow. Imagine if they could get it approved and GS was HTML based rather than have to download. People could sell their games directly to users (w/out apple's 30%cut) and they could get them onto the GS app viewer by using the GS HTML engine online without having to download. Nice little mini jailbreak.

Is that the official statement from GameSalad? Is it because of the recent games button?

There's two ways to look at that issue...

    1 - Who needs it?

While I like having test games saved on my iPhone, there are other ways to make that happen. Ultimately, I find the feature not as useful, as it has older versions of the game.

2 - Players would have to share their GameSalad project file for games to be shared with the world. I'm thinking most developers would not do that. With GameSalad, the idea is to publish games, not circumvent the iTunes App Store. Ultimately, it should lead to MORE games on the iTunes App Store, not less. Furthermore, you'd need a copy of GameSalad to load new games.

If that's Apple's issue, I think that could be worked out. Perhaps it could phone home to iTunes Connect. You'd have to be a registered developer to enable the recent games feature.

Maybe an expiration feature would satisfy the requirements... like only the three most recent games would be saved and/or games would expire after a month.

Even if the recent games button had to be removed, I think that's better for the community because of the marketing potential here. If you really need the recent games button, then the traditional version could still be made available.

It's not really that much work getting it on the device at all.

If you know what you're doing, it's not too difficult. It's annoying though... and it involves Xcode. If that software was more user friendly, GameSalad wouldn't be as useful. There are plenty of places for issues to appear.

    Examples of issues...

1 - Is it easier to use Xcode or click a link in iTunes?
2 - What if your Xcode isn't up-to-date? Enjoy two hours of downloading and updating.
3 - What if you forget to upgrade your viewer with every update to GameSalad? The iTunes App Store / iTunes can help remind you.

I've created apps with Xcode before using GameSalad. If I find the process annoying, I'm thinking it can be challenging for someone that's never used the software before.

It would also put an end to the expiring provisioning profile. I hate having to get a new one of those every few months.

Yeah, I guess. I always have Xcode updated though for other stuff. I've just found it's just part of the whole upgrade experience when the new version comes out.

yeah I keep my xcode up dated when ever I update my phones OS and so far I have never had any real issues with getting the viewer running so while it would be nice to not have to mess with it I don't think getting some exposure to xcode is a bad thing since we may some day want to learn more than drag and drop programing.

+1 to the mini jailbreak argument. Apple aren't going to like that and I don't think GS or our apps need that kind of attention. I'd rather see GS thrive than it meet the same fate as Flash.

Nice post... except for the spelling of "Photics"

    It's P-H-O-T-I-C-S.

It means - "The Science of Light"

    It's pronounced... foe... ticks... PHOTICS.
    ...similar to Physics.

I'm actually thinking of creating a splash screen for my games, where a Japanese Sumo Wrestler says, "Phooooooooootics" ...with that Japanese sounding "o" sound. And the tag line is, "Say it right!"

I'm not putting silly stuff in BOT, but maybe I'll start using this splash screen for the return of my arcade collection.

there is no reason why apple wouldnt let them. Its not a bypass. tons of app making sites use the same format. Download their App for testing your projects. Seattle Clouds. Red Foundry, Buzzapps, and a few more i have on the tip of my tongue but can think the names. There is no reason why GS couldnt do the same thing.

Even the saving to Viewer issue isnt a issue. You are the developer. You are sending your game to yourrrrrrr viewer. Not everyone elses. only you can see yourrrrr apps that you are testing. Add a simple login and password to the viewer like everyone else and everything is perfectly fine.

If 7 other sites are doing it then GS can to.
