Adobe Flash CS5 or GameSalad?

Hi,

I'm new here and I would love to make a game for IOS. After few days learning to make something on GameSalad I'm not sure if this is the right tool for me. I have some experience on flash, but very basic stuff. I'm not sure which direction I should focus on. I think game salad looks good and feel good to work with, but flash is also not so bad to learn either. What do you guys think? Which one would you prefer and why?

Apple will not accept games made with flash! So if you wish to publish on the app store, in this case i would select GameSalad. You say you are not sure if GameSalad is the right tool for you, do you care to explain this in more detail? GameSalad is a very powerful engine in the right hands but does have limitations

Not true. Apple changed this policy a few months ago. We published our latest app with Flash CS5.

There is an option in flash CS5 to create IOS apps, so they should get accepted, no?
Flash you need to know actionscript to do anything good. Gamesalad, no coding required. So depends if you know actionscript already.

If you are really experienced with Action Script 3, then Flash would be a great way to go, but be aware that there are not the "grab and drop" physics available with GS. If you have just done a bit of web work using AS2, I would stick with GS for gaming. Especially with the roadmap for future GS functionality.

what kind of performance were you getting with this? i have tried to export a game of mine i created in CS5 and the performance was crazily slow. any tips?

    - Learn GameSalad - A truly great tool, its only going to get better and better as they iron out memory leaks and add all the promised things over the next year. Very shallow learning curve, you can have something on the app store and Mac App store so so easily. Plus a fantastic incredibly helpful forum.

    - Learn flash ..you'll have to learn Action Script coding.

    - Learn one of the others... Unity (indepth programming knowledge a must, but creates awesome 3d,), Corona, (Lua programming knowledge needed, far steeper learning curve than GameSalad (but not supposed to be that bad, but not necesarily as fun), but faster loading times at the moment, with some extra abilities which GameSalad is due to get relatively soon).

    Those are your options...

I say stick with GameSalad.... its only going to get better...

Well, this was not a game, but there is a little interactive part... a mountain dulcimer you can play. The performance is not great, but I think a lot of that was my limited experience with AS3 (learning on the fly). Also, this was a strange project with other people involved, so it was a little of the old "design by committee" thing. I think the performance could have been much better if we had had more time and understood all the optimization potential in AS3.

Adobe has also just released an new version, CS 5.5 that is supposed to have a number of improvements to IOS publishing. Adobe stopped work on IOS, as you could understand, when Apple shut them out, but now they are back at it full steam.

The app we developed is free so you can see for yourself: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tourseky-1-craft/id410892643?mt=8

    Hey TC,
perhaps you can make the decision easier (for you) if you look at the bigger picture?
Are you going to publish your game to your web site as well?
If yes, Flash is worth considering!

GameSalad is definitely something you want to keep an eye on as it develops ...

I am in the same boat (sort of) but it all depends what Adobe does AND what GS can add. Then there is a third alternative which is cheaper and has a couple promising "drag & drop" projects on the cooker.

All in all, 2011, as it progresses, will offer many of us a lot of choices when it comes to "how" we make our stuff!

    Choices are always good :)

    Speaking of "good",

    Good luck :)
