So i know if I make a game based on some recent event like the Japan earthquake or 9/11 it would be in very poor taste. ...but what about Jack the Ripper? or the US civil war? ....something that happened over 100 years ago, would that be "ok"? what do you think?

Should be fine as long you don't use real names of people involved.

Yeah, I don't think the Civil War is "too soon", or Jack the Ripper. Look at it like this, because it's the same across all media, essentially, if it would be in poor taste to make a movie about it, it's the same for a game, and in the same light, it's how tastefully you handle the content as well.

Never be afraid to use taboo topics.

That being said, there's nothing taboo about Jack the Ripper.

I don't see how that is good advice, unless you are okay with wasting your time.

If you make a particularly taboo game, you will not get on the App Store. There is the possibility that you DO make it in to the App Store, and then get press for the fact that you taboo, which would end up helping.

Clearly common sense would have to be applied. It should be understood what will and won't get accepted to the app store. They clearly define that stuff in writing and it's not my business to be schooling people on the specifics of what they can or can't do. I was just simply suggesting that people should not be afraid to tackle taboo topics, ever in anything they're doing. It goes without saying that one should use proper sensitivity and common sense when doing these things, of course. But only dummies would do so otherwise.

    Respectfully,

I think you're right on if you're talking about art, but if you want to make money you should really evaluate your market before making subjective decisions about tastefullness.

I think it would really come down to what you mean by "afraid". I would definitely be cautious, which is what the OP is doing.

I don't know what is common knowledge in this circumstance.
