Retina Display As Default ?

Is it possible to have a game that is 'retina display' only, as in, there is 'NO' lower resolution graphics provided, how would I go about defining that, only provide the 2x res graphics and no lower res. and it will 'default' to retina only, or what ?

Yes it is possible. Have all your images at retina resolution and remember to NOT check the "Enable resolution independence" button.

Depending on the graphics it may result in lower performances on older devices but on the other hand you will save on file size.

All my game are retina only and so far I didn't receive complaints from older generation device users.

    Hello,
    Why would you want that?

Hi, thanks for the clarification, although I wasn't aware it would still work on older devices, I assume it creates lower resolution on the fly so that older devices work with a lower resolution graphic ?

Hi, I am creating some very specific artwork, a mixture of illustrator and pixel artwork, the graphics would be too low res for my liking at anything below retina res, hence the requirement to run in 'retina' only mode.

If you don't have RI on, it doesn't scale down I don't believe.

So, assuming you don't have RI switched on, I presume I wouldn't have to name my artwork 2x as I would before also if I 'was' using RI ?

    EDIT :

actually, that does a pretty good job explaining it all to me ! :)

Ah, that makes perfect sense ;)

How can your graphics be so hi-res that they would look unacceptable on anything but retina?

So they look unacceptable on your computer screen?

It's my play area, I'm attempting an isometric game, with a grid layout of 10x10 squares ( each tile is 42 pixels wide ), and the 'actors' I place within the grid would be far too small at half the res for my liking, plus I struggle to get good detail at very low pixel sizes, retina will work well for me.

"...and the 'actors' I place within the grid would be far too small at half the res for my liking"

The actors don't change physical size, just the amount of pixels that make them.

Like it or not, on non-retina devices, you will lose pixels... it's just whether you provide the artwork that will be shown on non-retina devices, or you let the device decide and run the scaling algorithm. Or it's possible from my reading that GameSalad is running the scaling algorithm. Regardless, I would rather have control of my lower-res art assets than let GameSalad or Apple run an algorithm on it.

Especially with pixel art, you have to be careful with sizing.

So, back to my original question, I can't make my game run in retina display only ? If someone purchases my game on an older device, it will automatically default to 320x480 and automatically scale all my high res graphics 'even' if I have resolution independence unchecked.

Is this true of Gamesalad ? I know there is games on the appstore that are 'retina display' only.

You want your game to not be purchasable by anyone without a Retina Display?

I'm not sure if you can do that through GameSalad.

Guess I'll have to make an ipad only version ?

Would appreciate a yellow 'voice of reason' :) post, I don't feel like I can start committing to my png's until I know what I can do ?

    (a) Can I make my game with highres graphics for retina display only / ipad ?
    (b) If I do only create high res artwork, will GS still create a lower resolution version anyway that is compatible with older devices ( even if RI is unchecked ) ?
    (c) If it doesn't, is there any way to stop this from happening, I am happy to market it as retina / ipad only ?

    Regards
