How safe are your ideas here?

If you talk about / post concept art / etc. about your game ideas for discussion here before you're finished, do you need to be worried about people stealing/copying?

Most likely yes. Yes as in you should be worried.

It depends how close to finishing you are....if you're very close, don't worry at all. It takes a long time for people to get art/copy the entire game concept.

Never post anything that you're worried about people stealing. Even if they don't use it right away (or even on an iOS device), it doesn't keep them from saving it and use it years from now.

If it's used years from now, your app will have been out for all to see for years anyway... I would be careful who you trust though, I only posted my latest game when it was almost done.

I have developed a few relationships on here with those I now consider friends and now trust as such. I think the main voices on here are certainly not going to rip you off, but I think there are 50,000 subscribers or the like, and I know I wouldn't publish my commercial ideas in a newspaper so would not put not put up things I saw as valuable to my own projects that might comprise it.

Knowledge of how the technical things are done, is pretty safe but if you have novel idea it might help you steal a march on the market.

As for game design, many people on here are making clones or variations of things in the market ('doodle zombie bird rush castle jump' here we come!), and food for their thought might be welcome but it might be at your expense. I am sure there are also few commercial lurkers as well, looking for anything that offers itself up for inspiration. I may be completely wrong but I know I would feel sick if a great idea got nicked from me (if my poor brain actually managed to have one...).

Artwork if it is something in a non personal style might be cloned, but I doubt many people could manage to emulate my scrawl.

@ace: Yes, of course, but it's still your work being stolen. You might never find out that it's being used somewhere.

I made a 3D image about 8-9 years ago and about 2 years ago a friend of mine stumbled upon it on a website. The image was a trash can with a big tounge and hands. The website was about trash disposal and I would've never seen it hadn't it been for my friend who was just wondering about trash pickup times in her area.

A lot of good thoughts here.

I guess there are the vocal members who all seem passionate and trustworthy, and I would love to know what they think about my direction, but it's probably not a good idea to put my ideas on the public forum.

I definitely didn't know there were 50,000 subscribers.

I thought this was a small community.

I wouldn't show anyone here what you're doing until you're about 70% complete. Thats how I roll, anyway.

I would say it's about as safe as someone walking up to Tito Ortiz and calling him a sissy girly man.

I personally err to the side of caution, and post a game only when it's released, especially with all the templates floating around here, people can make a game in a matter of days if they have the graphics and everything.

It's really up to you, and I think it's more of a personal decision than anything, but I choose to post about games only when they are submitted for review, or in stores.

I agree, only post when you are about ready to submit or in review.

Heh, this reminds me of a line from Guild Wars - Nundu Bay mission

"We heard that there was trouble here."
"There is trouble everywhere, here no more than elsewhere."

I haven't post too much information about BOT here...

Other than the game's icon, no screenshots were released. The controls are a secret, Item #2 still a secret, the map is a secret and much of the math / programming involved is also a secret.
