Can anyone help me?
I'm trying to make an app, much like 'The Nightjar', and I need to know how to pan out sounds so that the change volume determined how close you are to them and fade from ear to ear depending where the sound source is coming from?

That sort of thing.

Something like this should be possible and you might have to do the placement of the sounds with a mix of the positional sound and adjusting the sample volume by monitoring the player position and supposed distance from source. You might need at least two sound source with positions fixed for the left/right of each sound and then feed volumes to them based on the player position. I would probably use three. I'd have a left/ right and centre (to give closeness) and try to combine them. I am not sure if you would get any phase problems but you might be ok... If you do I would put small offsets on the sound samples so they become slightly out of line and enough to avoid the phase problem, and probably enough to make it a little like a gentle reverb. Hopefully this would not be necessary as we use the micro seconds between each ear picking things up to help get direction, not just comparative volume.

If you want to get really trick, you might even implement this in the positional stuff you do and add timers, but I would have to read up on sets and play with it to make sure the timers in GS would fire it accurately enough.

    Best to experiment.... good luck.

SkyMaple, is this great! Sort of the thing I'm looking for! I take it you could also do the same thing with panning?

None the less, you're a genius!

Haha, no old_kipper is a genius. I just translated what he said to GS format and tried it out. I can send it to you.
