no its actually a very low price. It used to $1999/year
You however do not need it to make a good game so I would recommend you just worry about making games before upgrading if you are concerned about recovering the cost.

I think that comparing to the old price is a bit meaningless for new comers.
Having said that, I think the $499 price is exactly where it should be. But instead on looking at what you are getting from a feature prospective, think of the simple logic behind the Pro membership. GS is a great FREE tool, you can build games and publish them. There is no difference between Free and Pro in respect to the game that you can create (unlike other tools, e.g. in Corona you are not allowed to publish your game with the free version). GS does not limit you in respect to the game creation tool set.
Go Pro if: - If you see yourself as a professional and want to create a professional image by adding your own splash screen (instead of GS) - If as part of that image you want to link to your website, other apps, facebook, twitter, etc. - If you want to build free, ad supported, games - Build a sense community around your game using gamecenter - If you care about GS and want to support them
While none of these will make your game better, paying $499 for a professional image ‘When the Time is Right’ should not be a show stopper for anyone serious about making profit out of games. If you are still in school and can't afford it, GS allow you to make great games, make some money and decide if you want to Pro or not. So instead of complaining about the price, appreciate the fact that it provided you with a great free tool to start making money without charging you for nothing and I hope that people will know to appreciate it and support them back once they have a great game out.
