accelerometer detection help, and tying that to the volume

Alrighty, this is what i need help with, i need to change the volume of something based on how hard the ipad is hit, and to do this, i want to use the accelerometer to first measure the jump in position, then relate that to another equation that would say, if the position was between say 5 and 10, then it would be this loud, and if it was this level, it would be this loud. Or even just have one attribute that related the jump in accelerometer to a louder volume
