Since updating my build does not play sound files anymore. It still plays music but not sounds? You cant even preview the sound in the audio tab.

Anyone with same issue.

What format are you using for your sound?

    Downloaded 0.9.3.

When I tested my game in the Preview within GameSalad it crashed once I started the main actor moving in the first level, but was fine when testing on a device.

The problem I had was to do with playing a sound at a specific time. I am now playing the sound 0.01 seconds later and the game is no longer crashing in Preview. However, I am not hearing any sounds at all in Preview.

Volume on the mac is up etc. and the sounds play fine when testing on a device.

    The sounds are Ogg files.

my sound files are a .ogg in the game
  • PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
GameSalad audio files are either .ogg, .m4a or .CAF

I think they changed something with .caf... so if you're just dragging-and-dropping mp3 files into GameSalad, I'm not sure what's wrong.

Same here - used ogg and Aiff (converts) and no sound in preview at all but on Viewer it's fine.
  • wickedman76wickedman76 Member Posts: 3
Same problem here as well. Makes it really had doing anything with music at the moment unless you send it to viewer. Very time consuming. Hope there is a quick fix.

Just a quick update on this. I was asked by GS to provide a copy of my game for them to look at, this was the response I received back.

(Copied from a email I received)
    Hi Keith,

Thanks for sending along the project.  I was able to verify that with our current in-house build of GS, your sound files were properly loading and playing.

Although I can't give you an exact estimate on when the next release of GameSalad will be, we are working to make sure it is released as soon as possible.

    Thank you for your patience,
    - Mik

So no answer yet! However I am grateful that they contacted me to investage the issue.

Still happening for me. Totally stuck with sounds. Very frustrating. Crippling my game development plans. Dying to know when it will be fixed. Need fix immediately!

I've tried it in all different versions of Game Salad and OSX, and it's always the same.
Music works, and SoundFX don't. This is especially annoying seeing as the differentiation between Music and SoundFX seems a bit arbitrary anyway! I can see how it makes things easier when setting up your Options Screen, etc, so Music assets are always controlled by Music Volume, and SoundFX are controlled by SoundFX volume, I suppose. But it seems strange that they use different enough playback methods that the Music works while the SoundFX don't! Anyway, I'm sure there's a reason for all that, I just hope that Game Salad can get a patch out for it ASAP. I really don't see why it can't be reproduced and fixed fairly trivially.

I've tried Game Salad 0.9.6 and 0.9.71 on both OSX 10.6.3 and 10.6.8.

All four configuration combination do the same thing.

I can play Music assets in the editor itself by clicking on the PLAY button on the Music clips, and I can use the Music in game. All fine.

But the SoundFX do not play in game, or by clicking PLAY on the clips in the editor. No SoundFX playing. Grrr!

Please, please, please help us poor Cure Duo users!

I cannot buy this software if the sound does not work.

To be honest, I'm pretty dumbfounded that I just bought my first Mac, and there's software/driver/compatibility issues with the audio. It just defies what I've always heard about the "Mac experience", and it's very frustrating.

I would love to hear from the Game Salad creators, to at least have reproduced this problem, that they've seen it, that they know it exists and acknowledge that it exists, and that there's a number of us out here suffering from it. There could be countless others who experience it and simply give up, and don't even bother coming to the forums to describe the problem.

Was the sound chip on these iMac4,1's different or something? Why would it only happen to certain computers?

Can you try different audio drivers? Is that possible? Has anyone tried that? If there was a driver that someone KNOWS works to fix this, then that would solve everyone's problem, and we wouldn't have to wait for GameSalad to fix this...???

I've looked through my System Preferences, and everything is all fine. All volumes are turned up, nothing is muted. It should work, but it doesn't.

I've just been dragging WAV files in, as that works for the Music, and from what I've read, GameSalad is converting the files when imported, so I figure WAV is the way to go.

Could it be that you need a special version of playback decoders installed on your computer to play back the specific format that Game Salad imports the files as? Like, if they're MP4s, do I need specific MP4 codecs installed? Or whatnot? Has anyone tried that? I'm a bit new to Macs, and have already caused my computer to become unbootable once by trying some "developer drivers" to fix this problem, and it took me hours to get my computer back using Time Machine. Hassle plus.

A fix to this problem would be the best news all month.

This is a real show stopper for me, and I can't really see the light at the end of the tunnel. Would love to hear some solid assurances from Game Salad right about now. Really hoped the fix would be listed in the 0.9.71 update. Alas.

Hi Hymloe, your frustration is understandable; it would drive me to distraction as well...

A couple of things to try (if you haven't already): in an audio prog like Audacity, Amadeus Pro or similar, try converting a few sound files from wav to aiff as well as ogg. See if that makes a difference.

Try your wav sounds in a new GS file, to see if they play OK. Check your problem file Rules to see if you've set the sound volume to 0 somewhere and forgot... ;-)

Also look at the file package contents - look in the sounds folder - are your sounds in there? There was a bug in a past beta that deleted them for some reason. If they're not there, replace them and you'll have your sounds back.

    Hope you get it sorted.

I recall reading somewhere that on the original coreduo machines it is a problem with sound not playing.

How about playing in the viewer on the actual iphone? Is there sound then?

Could try one of those cheap usb sound devices and some external speakers to see if that helps.

Has everyone tried different sample rates and bit depths ?
  • LumpAppsLumpApps Member Posts: 2,881
Ah, good one, will try that now ;)
Thanks in advance for the suggestion
  • HymloeHymloe Member Posts: 1,653
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'll try a few of those things and get back t you with the results.

Trying an external sound card is an interesting idea. I'll try my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.

Also, I'll try inputting some different file formats and sample rates, etc.

Off to bed now. Shall report back later. :)

    HOLY LORD MARY!

    I'VE FIGURED IT OUT!

I downloaded Audacity, and tried saving to LOTS of different formats. Nothing. Always get MUSIC and no SOUNDFX.

Then I tried CAF ULAW and CAF ALAW, and they work!! They work in the Game Salad normal game preview viewer thing.

    YES!

To save in these formats, just download Audacity for free here...
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_mac

    And click File > Export,
then in the Format dropdown box, select "Other uncompressed files",
then select the Options button, select...

Header: CAF (Apple Core Audio File)
    Encoding: A-Law or U-Law.

Then, proceed to rock the casbah.

All the best, and now I'm happy. Geez that was an ordeal.

Ow I hope this works. I have delayed my release as we speak and am really stressed out.
On top of that my mouse isn't working, a customer isn't paying and it is starting to get cold in Holland. Thanks Hymloe, I'll give it a try (again all my sounds need to be processed... for the 10000 time).

Sorry to complain but I am having one of those days :)
  • LumpAppsLumpApps Member Posts: 2,881
    OMG!
When I save as CAF instead of Ogg and drop it on GS creator it doesn't see it as the same file so doesn't replace it. Then I have two sound files with the same name in my game.
So I must delete all the oggs, then reimport the CAFs and assign them to all my sound behaviors.
I thought computers where made to make live easy. I've just had it for today. I'm going to play outside I think.
  • Rob2Rob2 Member Posts: 2,402
I have you guys tried saving as wav (I know - barf yuck pukey) and then let GS do the conversion?
  • HymloeHymloe Member Posts: 1,653
Letting Game Salad convert from a WAV did not work for me.

Hey Ludwig, one crazy idea. You could MAYBE try just renaming your CAF files to the OGG extension, and then drag them in, thus replacing the old files (because they have the same name), but during playback, they might just work, even though they're CALLED OGGs, they may play back appropriately in Game Salad as the real CAFs that they are.

Who knows! Could be worth a try. Although could cause problems during the "convert to device" process. Who knows. Give it a go with a few files and see what happens. Could make things easier. Would be curious to know if that works.

    Night!
  • HymloeHymloe Member Posts: 1,653
Ludwig, I just renamed a CAF file to OGG, and dragged it in, and it still plays for me.

So I'd suggest renaming all your CAF files to OGG, and drag them in, selecting to replace the existing ones, and I believe it might just work, without having to redirect any of your Behaviours to the new files.

    Rock.
  • LumpAppsLumpApps Member Posts: 2,881
I tried it the other way round because it looks safer.
I did change the sounds already there to .CAF in the sound folder and then imported the real .CAF files but it started acting strange. The sound was working in game but in the sounds menu they didn't play.
I left it for now. I also have support from GS and they are looking into my project. My problem is different. My sound FX play but ofter a level reset they sometimes stop to never be heard from again :(
I don't want to mess up my project, it is to important for me at this moment.

Its sad but I can live with it for now. Just hoping for an easy fix... Haha! :s

    Thanks for the idea though!

    Cheers!
