Now, there's a reason they're not going after big developers. They knows if they can get a thousand indie devs making reasonable amounts to pay up, it will convert to a very significant residual income for absolutely no work. Until, that is, someone decides to fight back.
The hope is that Apple steps in and fights for the developers, or contributes part of their 30% cut to the licensing. I expect them to do just that, since it is in their interest to keep developers happy. I also expect Google would step in, since they also offer in-app purchases (which would be used for upgrades in many circumstances). If these companies decide to protect their developers, the PR will be insanely good for them, and it will create an amazing sense of community and a warm and fuzzy feeling for all of us. If Apple ignores it, it will likely cause a lot of resentment even if it's not directly Apple or Google or Microsoft's "fault".
