That's not true, they are trying to extract money from individual indie developers.

What do you mean that's not true? We are indies and the article is clear that apple andothers already pay and now they want our portion, if we had that feature we'd be on their list. But yes I hope they fail

As long as they use profits to develop quicker acceptance times, video previews of the games (instead of screenshot ONLY) etc... I wouldn't mind paying it at all.. It's when companies strictly take the profit and run that I have a problem. Using money to create a better product (research and development) is fine.

this is a money grab, and I can't believe it will hold up. they already license the tech to apple who provide it to us as a service. they are trying to get paid from both ends, or more likely, trying to get apple to payout more money.

That is true. They do offer a service which could have untold new options. Hopefully, with the new found money they will work with apple to improve the app store.

they are a patent firm. their only concern is that they get paid for what they are owed. that's it.

First, this is specific to in-app upgrades, not in-app purchases. They're claiming their patent involves the process of converting a free app to a paid app through a purchase inside the application. The more important point is that the patent is extremely vague, and likely would not hold up in court. However, how many indie devs have the money to actually go to court and hire a lawyer and risk losing or risk not getting court/lawyer fees paid for. There are two things that will help set this right - 1) Apple steps in or 2) Developers band together and fight Lodsys.

Now, there's a reason they're not going after big developers. They knows if they can get a thousand indie devs making reasonable amounts to pay up, it will convert to a very significant residual income for absolutely no work. Until, that is, someone decides to fight back.

The hope is that Apple steps in and fights for the developers, or contributes part of their 30% cut to the licensing. I expect them to do just that, since it is in their interest to keep developers happy. I also expect Google would step in, since they also offer in-app purchases (which would be used for upgrades in many circumstances). If these companies decide to protect their developers, the PR will be insanely good for them, and it will create an amazing sense of community and a warm and fuzzy feeling for all of us. If Apple ignores it, it will likely cause a lot of resentment even if it's not directly Apple or Google or Microsoft's "fault".

Exactly. If they thought they actually had a patent that would hold up they would have been knocking on the door of Rovio and the other devs that generate a lot of revenue.

They are just weasels with a 20 year old vague patent trying to make an easy buck off of other people's real efforts.
