Has anyone had any success using a contest as a way to promote your game?

I was thinking as a way to drive sales for a game, I could have a contest where the first person that submits a video of them achieving a certain score (something hard but achievable) wins a prize (e.g. $100 iTunes gift card or something like that).

What do you think? Has anyone tried using a contest to promote your game before? If so, was it a success? What unforeseen problems did you encounter?

I've seen this in an old Dutch c64 game named 'Eindeloos' if I recall it well. (Eindeloos means with no ending).
Gamers who made it to the end would see a code and first one to call in the code (no email back then ;) would win something.

    Nice strategy in my opinion.

I did a "face book like" contest. People had to like my Kung Fu Finger page and got a promo for 5 of them, ended up with 10 likes and one "F you" from some youngster. LOL!

Perhaps an idea is to put a secret email address at the end of your game (if it has an ending).

...he probably misspelled Kung Fu ;)
