GS on a Hackintosh...

edited November -1 in Working with GS (Mac)
I know this has been asked before but I've been away a very long time... has anyone here actually managed to get GS up and running, and deliver an app to the app store, using a hackintosh?

The reason I ask is that I had to sell my Mac and buy a PC as my game dev course is all windows-based... I really want to get back into GS stuff, though and I thought I might try installing OS X on the PC... I don't have the cash to get another Mac right now.

Ah, good to hear! I guess if at least GS runs, I could upload from someone else's Mac if I REALLY had to. Thanks :)

Hey yeah! Have you got your system up and running? If you haven't, there are a lot of folks over at insanelymac.com that can help you. I am personally over there as "Computer Geek" (lol)

Nah, not yet... just running Win7. I have an AMD system, so might be a bit tough... but I'll give it a go ;-)

Apple has a clause in their developer agreement thing making you agree to not develop on a non apple computer.
I doubt they can enforce it, can they?
I was going to put OSX on one of my pcs but I impulse purchased an imac

When I first started writing iOS apps with GameSalad, I wanted to use a hackintosh because I have 9 PCs lying around the house. After looking in to it, it became such a huge hassle that I finally decided to just shell out the cash for a mac. That way, once you write something, you can upload it to Apple without having to worry about borrowing a mac. If money is an issue, I have a Mac Mini for sale. I have used it ever since I started with GameSalad and it works great!!! The only reason I am selling it is because I need a laptop. I am asking $500 for it, but the price is negotiable. Let me know if your interested :)

Hey Polygame have you ever looked into parallels or vmware fusion? It works great and is pretty cheap and you have not only a mac but a windows computer in 1

o i see, there is definitely no issue with uploading with a hackintosh, you just need to make your computer look like a mac using a smbios.plist. Just do forum search over at insanelymac.com, and there should be some guides on smbios.plist.

I use a Hackintosh VM on a PC, that way I get the best of both worlds. However I also have a 2000 Mac Mini (HTPC) and 2008 Mac Book, so if I really need to get to a mac. but this PC is more powerful (Core i7) than other two combined so I use this as my dev machine.

However yes, hackintosh is a bit of an hassle sometimes, you don't know which updates might kill you, you need to have an very good and upto date backup and don't install updates as soon as they release wait for some reports on success on the forums etc.

They way I would see it, use hackintosh if you don't mind if the box is down for a couple of days or even a week (worst case, happened to me after 10.6.2 update). If not get the real thing.

Not quite sure you understand the question. I don't have a Mac... and why would I need Bootcamp if I did have a Mac?

    I'll ask you a question:
why do you sell your mac and buy something else?

    GAMES! LOL.

Not just for playing them, but I'm studying game dev full-time, we use Windows and DirectX. I'll be mainly building PC apps and games, so no need for a Mac (apart from the iPhone stuff).

Your biggest mistake was to sell your mac because running windows on bootcamp is much more stable than hackintosh or vmware, now it's not so hard to get up and running mac on pc but what you are gona have difficulty with is soundcard and USB working correctly, vmware once setup you have to tell how much ram and hard drive to put to one side for mac so already a drain on resources, plus the same with hackintosh sound card,USB ports,

As I said before, most of my future projects will be PC-based. I only intend to port one game to iOS (the remake of Max Vector)... so not really a "mistake" selling my Mac. Plus I like to PLAY games... the selection is much better on PC... gotta love Steam!

@gamedivisonuk: I'd have to say the hardest things are #1 Graphics and maby #2 sound, but there is support for the intel chipsets, but I have no idea what AMD uses for sound chipsets, and that might be pretty hard...

Though, I have never tried an AMD hackintosh, so I have no idea how stable it is, or even what applications are supported.
