Can someone please tell me why people buy Templates?

Is it a way to make a quick buck to post it on the app store just or to tweak the game and change the background and the characters to make it work for your needs?

To learn how others do things, reduce time in dev, to make a buck, to use it as a container for new ideas, to see it as a set of rules to break or as something to subvert? All are possible.

If there was a competition based on a very limited template. Perhaps a mini game and only a couple of days to complete it like the Vimeo weekend competitions, and the winner was the most original, I think it might show what is possible within templates and break people's thinking away from the obvious. It would be an interesting test of the brains on here.

The idea behind the templates we make over at deepblueapps is to give users a base to build on and also so they can learn from the code.

Your always going to get a small number of people upload to apple as-is which is a shame and has tarnished GS imo.

My hope is that everyone who pays for a template will change it and build on it.

The tower blocks/sheep stacker was recently N&N after a user changed the art and added there own work to it so it makes sense to build your own game from the templates rather than just upload as-is.

Just to add to what old_kipper and Darren said: like music has only so many different styles, and books have a limited amount of genres, so there are only so many types of game out there. Platformer, topdown, isometric, different types of physics-based ones, shoot-em-up, RPG, adventure, etc.

In the main there might be more than one way of producing a paticular template but the end result is what matters and providing that the buyer of the template adds their own creativity (including their own graphics) maybe even adding some new twist to that particular game formula, there's should be no worries.

Personally, it's simply to know how one specific feature is made. But if I have a specific idea to tweak the game to make it more interresting, I might buy a templare to itterate a game. I haven't done this yet because I want my first game to be unique, but I'm thinking about it for next games.

But yeah, there is a lot of clones around the app store that doesn't change the game much and simply change the graphics. Even if I don't really approve this, I accept and understand why people does that: saves a lot of time.

I've only bought one so far...(sound volume controls by Deep Blue Apps)..

    Why?

Saved time.. I know how to do it...but it literally saves alot of time that could be invested on other parts of a game.

I don't think I'd buy a full blown template, but happy buying little extras... I like the look of t-shirts 5 game mechanics template as one of those 5 could work well with a game idea thats been brewing for some time.

But if I decide to try and make money quickly I can se that buying a 'endless runner' template, make a nice title some unique graphics and sell it. You'd quickly get your investment back and its another title on the app store...

Similar with me, I bought the excellent platformer template from Darren just for one particular aspect of it; bit expensive for just a couple of Rules in an actor but I still thought it was worth it; it was a neat piece of Ruling. :-)
