Hi Guys

My newest project is coming to an end. Im launching it with 64 levels to start with and have 6 left to do! I think this is my best game yet, it doesnt have the cutesy graphics so i dont think it will have a huge appeal but well, i like it :) Once the levels are complete i will finish up the menu, options etc.

However, what i do need is;

A new name
Leaderboards on GameCenter

Its not a typical high scoring game so think i may have to come with something clever to let the player score!

As always though, i would love your opinion on the game and any suggestions for name and methods for leaderboards would be great :)

You can watch me explain the game in the below video, please note the video is a bit jerky, the gameplay is actually a lot smoother than what this would have you believe. Also, on the video i talk at times like you can see the mouse, it doesnt make a huge difference but i had the mouse set not to show on the video! D'oh!

The way I'd approach this, if I may, is to make 'time' a factor ( I would say that, being a Quantum Sheep :D )

Have each level be part of a 'world' made up of say 10 levels.

Each level will be timed, and will add to the world score. If you replay a level, and get a faster time, then the world score will update to show this.

At the completion of each 10th level, you'd upload the score to GC - the one with the fastest time is ranked higher.

Feel free to ignore this, but one way you could represent time is the blue light that goes across the screen on the grid.

Essentially, when the light gets to the bottom, time's up, and it makes the blue light more than just an aesthetic choice. It gives it a purpose.

Then, on level complete, show the time in numbers.

The blue line gives you a rough estimate of how much time has elapsed. For example, even if you complete the level twice while the blue line is in the middle of the third grid line, and in roughly the same place, you may get different times. You just won't know the 'exact' time till the level's complete.

Anyway, best of luck with it!

    QS :D

I feel the same way :)

Thank you very much ... Greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the ideas mate. I was however trying to avoid the timing aspect, sometimes its hard to find the correct line and with added pressure of time you can make more mistakes, not see the correct line and become too frustrated .... well thats how i felt about it anyway!

Any name ideas? you've normally good names coming out that beautiful mind of yours ;)

One possible scoring option would be shots left at the end of a completed level. Looks really cool btw. Love the gravity effect!

    Gravitron
    Gravitronic
    Gravitronix
    Gravity Well

    Gravity Balls

I have no idea if any of those are already used/taken.

    Vectoids
LinearX - i like this, it could be either Line Ar(x) or Linear-X
Ohhh I love this for a vector-looking game: Interpolate (lol, but seriously)

dat's all i got for now. Will try again later. lol

Like both Vectoids and LinearX, interesting on the Line Ar(x) - Could intrigue the potential buyers!!!

Excellent, glad you like the look of it, i've had a lot of fun making and testing it.

I did think about the shots left but a lot would come out very similar due to the design nature! This wouldnt make the leaderboards very exciting. I did think about maybe making up an equation for it. e.g. unlocked level x (random number) divided by the amount of retries. Then will then be a button to submit your scores at any point. If you're on a roll and havent had many retries you could submit but maybe you're unlocked level isnt very high so could work out quite well.

Keep in mind, the only reason that "cutesy" is perceived to be the only thing that sells well is because the market is over-saturated with it. It's like reaching in a bucket of fish and pulling out... a fish.

But your gameplay looks great, and I would love to play it compared to others, and retro can be a powerful thing
    two words: Tron Legacy

Just by making a subtle glow on you lines, and a light gradient on solids, you can give a modern presence to a retro style.

And I love the idea of naming it something you'd find in an 80s arcade (like Jeffrey's suggestion of Gravitron)

    My suggestions:

    Gravitross
    Gamma Arc

Thanks for the suggestion, 1 of our own 'Quantum Sheep' has a game called Gravitrixx so i'd like to stay away from anything Gravi....

As far as scoring (if you must, sometimes I don't see the point of GC on games that don't need it)

I would create a separate arcade mode the requires you to play from the beginning and only gives you a set number of balls.

At the start of each level, you have a points value that diminishes over time. so the longer you take, the less points you get, on completion of level, that point value is added to total score.

out of balls, game over, and that score gets entered to Game Center

after earning so many points, or getting past so many levels you get new balls (extra lives)

that way you can have an arcade style competitive game, and then have an original mode that let's players play through the levels at their own convenience and unlock as they go.

Completely agree! However its hard for the majority of the market to pull themselves away from what is effectively rammed down their throats with the cutesy games dominating the charts! I have tries a few games with the cutesy graphics and its been like a needle in the haystack!

Im humbled by these kind words. I decided with this game play style that i solely wanted it focussed on the gameplay, doing anymore with the graphics would ruin the whole feel of the game for me. I just hope the retro market are shopping in force ;) Either way, im proud of it, enjoyed making it and its a game i feel i would like to play ... I can only hope others share my thoughts!

As i said above, due to Quantum Sheep having a title named Gravitrixx i would like to stay clear of Gravi... Gamma Arc is good though.

I think i'll leave it a day or so whilst i finish the levels and then draw all the names together and see if a sous chef can add a poll for me. Theres been some good names mentioned :)

In that case... I'm totally keeping Gravitross then. It will be about a Space-seabird-robot that uses a railgun to bend space-time. brilliant.

Ooooh very nice idea Sir, i love the idea of an arcade mode and i think i shall implement that and leave the already created levels as they are without any scoring!

If i dont see that at number 1 on the appstore im gonna be totally gutted ... What an idea :)

How about setting a attempt number threshold that makes you eligible for a combo. So let's say that level 1 has a threshold of two and you complete it in 1 shot. Then level two has a 3 shot threshold and you complete it in 3 shots - now you just earned a combo for being under the threshold for two consecutive levels. 3 in a row under the threshold even bigger combo, etc.

How about "Geo Gravity Ninja Bird Zombie"

    Only joking.

The GEO thing seems to work with this though

Oooo, I hadnt thought of the idea of combos! Certainly food for thought which might be worth exploring. Thanks.

Haha yeh may have to slip the those names in somewhere. lol.

I agree Geo does seem to work quite well for these kind of games and helps the user get a sense of what style of game it will be before clicking
