I want to start a game for the iphone and i want to make it look its best using the iphone retina display. I understand the resolution independence thing should do this but i dont understand how to set up the picture for the retina display, i understand that i just have to make them for the iphone 4 and that by checking resolution independence it will convert them for the other iphones/ipod touches. but how exactly do i make the picture have more pixels? i use gimp first of all, can anyone kind of give a step by step on how to do this? Any help is appreciated.

Hi muoch10, if you want to use the resolution independence, just make sure all your images are twice the size.

no, what i mean is how do i do that? do i in stead of putting 320 by 480 put 640 by 960? or do i change the 72 pixels per inch thing?

your images have to be 72 dpi ALWAYS. And like gyro said you just check resolution independence and make your art twice the size .

so say you were makin a background for the iphone so you would normally make it 480x320.

Instead you make it 960x640, then when you import that image to gamesalad as long as R.I is checked it will make that a 480x320 actor so it fits.

Then gamesalad will automatically use the high res image for iphone 4 and lower ones of older devices.

And the double thing applies to everything. So if you wanted a player actor thats 100x100 you would make the art 200x200 because when you import with R.I checked it will make a 100x100 actor

And the last thing it to make sure all your images are even when divided by 4

Hi, that'll be for "normal" graphics, i.e when not using resolution independence.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

All of your actors and your entire game needs to be designed based on 480x320 iphone sized screens. Then if you want to display high resolution Graphics on the iPhone 4 you need to make all of your Art work double the dimensions of the actors they are in. You also need to make sure all of the actors are even numbered dimensions to begin with so that you will have High Res art that is divisible by 4. That is so the art is not blurry because for every 1 pixel on a low res device there are 4 on the 4th gen devices.
