Any tips for smooth fades?

I am using interpolates to fade images and also to change rgb values.... but on longer fades it's just not smooth. Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

The longer interpolates are probably done in the same number of steps over a longer period so you get a more jumpy, less smooth result.

Perhaps you could chain 2 or 3 quicker interpolates together

    e.g interpolate 1 to 0.5

    when alpha = 0.5 interpolate to 0

don't know if this will improve it but worth a test...

Hi; for info if you didn't know : transitions are on the GS Roadmap; hopefully that'll include fades (bound to) some time in the future. :-) (Not that that helps you now...)

Use interpolate and use fade in or fade out:).

FYI part of the reason they don't look right is you cannot actually interpolate an image.

What you can do that makes a decent fade in and out is interpolate Your colors to 0 and then change image when at 0 and then interpolate back to 1 You can get a pretty nice fade in and out effect that way. If you would like to see and example of that take a look at the Stacks level select video. You'll see it in action.

Could you use FLOOR and interpolate to get an even more graded and smooth fade?

This was what I was doing. Fading using interpolate on the alpha value, to fade up and down. Short fades seem to work better but once you push the length of the fade there appear to be kicks in the values that are visually apparent. Using the envelopes in interpolate don't seem to help, in fact seem to make things worse. It maybe that I am spoilt by After Effects and rendered effects, and that realtime fades are just pushing too hard.

I am not sure how I would use the Floor function to smooth things... Would you explain it please. Thanks

Alpha fading with interpolate has been buggy for a while; can't think of an alternative though. Seem to remember that Linear is smoother than Ease In, Ease Out, EaseIn/EaseOut if that helps.
