Does Apple compress apps for iTunes?

Does anyone know if Apple compresses apps for iTunes download? I initially didn't think so but for example, with my game Sketch Ball, it's 11.4mb as the app file gamesalad sent me. On iTunes it's only 5.6mb and that's with resolution independence!

Consider me officially confused!

My latest game Dust Those Bunnies! just downloaded an ad-hoc and it was 38.4mb! 38.4mb of greatness if I do say so myself but I was hoping for a downloadable version from the iphone itself.

I hope they actually do compress apps.

Thoughts? Feelings? Do tell! :)

I am not totally sure on this but believe that Apple does zip the file based on the the work around for putting imovie on an ipad one. In a blog I found it says to rename the ipa file to .zip to open it to change things around a bit to get it to run. This indicates that an .ipa might be just a zip package.

Others on here might confirm this or give better info than I can but if it is true you could try zipping your return app file from to check it's download size (for that magic 20 meg download size...).

Hope that helps and do check with others as I am only about 50% sure on this.

When you send the file through Application loader to iTunes Connect you have to compress it before. If you check the size of the zip file you send it should be the same as the size listed on the AppStore.

It is my understanding that when you download a game from the AppStore you download the compressed version and during the install it decompress it.

Interesting this would make sense seeing as how I just checked sketch ball in my iTunes and it was 9.9mb so bigger than what iTunes says it is 5.6mb. This is really good news. :)
