Still struggling with "velocity of a flick"

I've asked this once before but I can't find the post to ask it again. Maybe someone has an answer.

My brother and I are wanting to make a home run derby type game. We want to make it so that when you "flick" the bat at the ball the velocity of the "flick" would determine the distance of the ball. I can easily find the magnitude of the start/end of the "flick."

I guess my question is this; does anyone know if the "velocity of flick" in home run derby/baseball games determines the distance or if it's the magnitude?

If it's magnitude then that's super easy. If it's velocity, we might have some problems.

If you think velocity is the best idea, how do I do that?!
