Get your game a publisher?

Has anyone in the history of GameSalad ever had their game published by Chillingo or any business like that? I've been talking back and forth with Chillingo about Dust Those Bunnies! and am wondering if anyone has an opinion or advice here?

I talked to a guy on Monday that has been doing some work with them. He says its good and bad.
    1) you're kind of at the whim of their offer. If you choose to accept it, it's not always fantastic (percentage wise) for you, but they will market the crap out of your game.
    2) They will be completely honest with you on why your game was not selected. He said the rejection of his game was worth more than them taking it on, he learned a lot about what they're looking for and what features/things to add to his games for the future.
    3) They don't accept many games because they get a TON of them all the time. It's like a high school rock group that thinks they just need to get in front of a record producer and they'll be signed to a multi-million dollar deal. It never works like that. Be patient with them, if you're game is good enough they'll pick it up in a heartbeat.

If you're already in talks with them, then you've gone a long way my friend! Good luck!

    Interesting, thanks for the feedback.

Well Darren used them way back and it did not hep him.
And the guys from Angry birds said in a press release that they do not recommend any dev going with a publisher.

    Cheers

I did read that press release. It's hard to tell if Chillingo had much to do with the success of Angry Birds, obviously Rovio doesn't think so. I guess it's possible that they are wrong. What game did Darren have them publish? Was it a GameSalad game? I only ask because I've been curious if publishers are biased against GameSalad too?

    Hey Andrew,

Personally, I would publish Dust Those Bunnies myself before letting another company do it. It is a phenomenal game, and I think it will sell rather well. If a company like Chillingo thinks the app is good enough to buy, then I'm sure it will sell on the App Store even without the butt load of marketing they do. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide.

If you're in talks with them already, then I don't see the need to be worried about bias. From what I've seen, the publishers are OK, but I don't see how they're a huge benefit either... unless marketing is not your thing.

Chillingo only takes games that get incorporated with their Crystal SDK & since it's made with GS... they're going to say no. Trust me, I tried.

    Thanks for the kind words.

Well, marketing isn't really my thing. I kind of hate it actually. But I also believe that Dust Those Bunnies! should sell itself. You hear rare instances where the developer didn't do any marketing and their game is still a success, but let's be honest. The chances of that are very low.

The App Store is a huge gamble. Sometimes crappy games make it in the top 50, while really awesome games don't make the top 500. Because of this, I have done very little marketing. In fact, here's my marketing strategy.

Step 1: Make a kick ass game
Step 2: Make an awesome trailer showcasing the brilliance of the game
Step 3: Send an email out to as many people as you can and tell them to forward it on to people they know that have iOS devices
Step 4: Post on the GS forums
Step 5: If your game is good enough, post on the Touch Arcade forums
Step 6: Get as many people as you can to post about your game on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)
Step 7: If you see some interest in your game, and sales are pretty good so far, try to get popular sites to write a review of your game.
Step 8: If steps 1-7 are successful, do a press release online to get your game out there even more
Step 9: Watch the sales grow and grow and grow
Step 10: Blow Angry Birds out of the water.

Now obviously I have not made it through all of those steps yet, but I continue to try. In fact, we just submitted our best game yet today, so we will see how far down this list we get with it.

Publishers for iOS games seems kinda redundant. For consoles it's a must, especially if you what to get onto XBLA.
