Is there money in flash games?

With sites like new grounds, is there any real money it that area. I feel that most of us are here to make money. Is it worth making flash games. Also if I look at the roadmap I see that gs might have a yoyo games type service and possibly a monitizeable one. That would be so awesome.

If you made a ton of games, couldn't you setup a website and have ads on it? Like all those free online game website around the web.

To make money off of a flash game, you need to find a sponsor that will pay for exclusive hosting rights. So they would be looking for games to draw in visitors to your site. I remember hearing something like Adult Swim would pay something like $30,000 for a game. Likely at which point they would hold all copyrights to the game. But again, this if for a game that draws in millions of viewers to the site regularly.

There have been a few mentions of flash earnings in the indie game podcast and Another Castle. I can't remember which ones but I got the impression that a few people do really well out of it. I think it's as crowded as the apps store for games and getting a deal is not that easy

The good point of flash games is that you get a lot of plays (if the game is good). You could use this to promote an iphone port, but it better be an upgraded sequel or people won't buy the game they can play for free.

This is what Canabalt did, they didn't nearly get as much download as the flash version and they waited for the hype to be over.

As said Mrshoestore, the main way to make money is to get sponsor. Get a good game trailer asking for a sponsor. I think the biggest sponsors pay somewhere around 5000 to 10000$ for a good game.

Im sure the sites with flash games make money off of ads and they pay the developers for how many plays their game gets? i have no idea. But I know ads are a big part of it
