If your just in it for the money then you'll continuously get discouraged. It's a long journey with a lot of competition, this isn't some internet get rich quick scheme.

My advice would be to put all your effort into your games. Don't use an shortcuts just to get it out on the appstore
    you have to have great
    icon
    screenshots
    gameplay
    Art
    Concept

and the game has to be fun or addicting in some way. So its going to be tough reaching top 20 but its definitely possible.

$50 a day is not really possible unless you get to the top 20. I get like a dollar per week, then again I'm fairly new to the iOS.

you do NOT need to be in the top 20 to get 50$ bucks a day. When you are in teh top 20 you get like a thousand bucks a day. You don't even need to be in the top 200 to get 50$ bucks a day.

Also, keep in mind that games sell well when first released, but after a few months on the market sales will dwindle.

If you're passionate about making games then your passion will shine through what you create. You'll do well in the app store.

Learn from your mistakes and get games up there. I released a game just so I could get a game on the app store. Its a pretty terrible game, but I knew that. I learned from that adventure and I'm going to do better next time.

    Good luck!

If I'm not mistaking two of the highest GS games were Bumps by Utopian Games and The Secret Of Grisly Manor by Firemaple games. The last one did bout 100,000 dollars and Utopian games did about 20-30 thousand.

Grisly manor is about at 170,000 now. Idk if bumps did that well. But they had to split it between 3 people on the team. Firemaplegames got all the money to himself! haha.

Making any money with a game is a tough biz model. You have already read about good art, etc and good code and and and, but a unique idea, that catches peoples imagination and allows them to relate to the game is issue number one. Way back when, space invades did well, great actually, the hook was not so much the game but the fact that YOU were saving the planet from pesky invaders. Todays games are much better in graphics etc but most fall short of getting the player to buy in and relate to the game. The word people use is addictive, which is a silly concept, but relating to the game, feeling some form of empathy etc with the game will get you to the top of some heap.

Concept, relation for player, testing testing and then more testing.

But if you do it for money, good luck but that is what you relate to not the player.

    Tada

This is the #1 mistake made by new game developers.

I went to a sort of presentation held on a college I might go to. Interactive stuff, people got to tell things about themselves, etc.
The presentator (teacher at the school) asked some guy what he was doing here, and why he is here. He responded with that he is interested in a study in gamedev. 'Why?' the presentator asked. 'Because I like playing games.'
What followed was a long, semi-raging speech about how that gets you nowhere. Hell, it's better to not like playing games than to do so! Playing games isn't the same as making them. In fact, they're two completely different worlds, bound together by a tiny string with the label "games" on it.

Wat I'm trying to say is that if you enjoy playing games; that's fine. Just see if gamdev is really something for you first. It's a tough job, like people above me already said, and income isn't extremely high. You need to enjoy what you're doing, as you'll be spending a humengous amount of time doing it.

    Hope I didn't demotivate you. If I did, sorry. ^^;
But if you're planning to make 50$ a day, then be prepared for a long, hard struggle.

i think it would be easier to compose a song and then die!
Good songs do well once the composer or performer dies.
Games .... just die on their own.

Elvis is still doing well :)
