Hey, everybody!

Billy Garretsen, head of GameSalad's internal game team, has prepared a 3-part entry on "Best Practices" for designing for HTML5 and GameSalad Arcade within GameSalad Creator. We're posting them all to blog and I will include links here for everyone.

This is part 1 of 3 -- The Basics.

Parts 2 & 3 coming soon...

    And here's the next one:

Part 2 of 3: Optimizing for HTML5: Controllers

Part 3 coming up RIGHT NOW!

    And, finally...

Part 3 of 3: Optimizing for HTML5: Blending Modes

That wraps it up for this first batch of "Best Practices". I'm sure Billy G. has even more tips tucked up his sleeve and we'll make sure to post them here as soon as they become available.

At this time, we're only supporting 480 x 320 on GameSalad Arcade, but we're certainly looking to supporting other screen sizes/resolutions.

As for the Chrome App Store, the launch of Grisly Manor and Zombie Drop was really something of an experiment (and one we feel went really really well!). It did have a few hoops to jump through, so we're still examing the best way to scale and roll out that functionality.

I kinda hope GS doesnt monetize the Arcade..... That would just be competition for apple. And then apple would frown and might decide to find a reason GS games cant be on the app store. Granted The Arcade selling games wouldnt dent apples sales. But again we are talking about apple. I think its a good advertising tool. Nice way to let future users give it a test run, see it in action. And point them in the direction of other games made by out GS brothers and sisters. Plus I love the idea of having a Personal FB page displaying all your apps. I also hope that moving on past just the "limited to" 320 x 480, Is a very close in the future goal. And not something put way way way on the back burner. 1: Not all good iphone games are in landscape mode. 2: iPad sales and the 1024 x 768 working space is great for games as well. And more and more iPads are selling everyday. So I hope increasing publishing choices will go from just 320 x 480.

I'm having some problems converting my actual game to a HTML5 version... Lots of things that work well on my preview platform just doesn't seem to work on my web preview. I did however found a new solution for many of them, but I still hasn't found a solution for Interpolate. Interpolating position.x for example.

    Anyone having the same problems?

I havn't seen any issues with interpolate in my projects. What are the expressions you are using?

    Interpolate self.position.x to game.screen.size.width / 2

one quick question - will the box around the game with the options/info/volume/platforms be removable when i embed outside of the gamesalad arcade.

if not , couldnt this be a possibility for us pro users - much the same as removing the GS splash screen it would be good to just have the game.

    Thanks a lot

I have been working on a project for quite some time, and now with the newest release of GS, when I click on web preview, it just crashes GS and will not preview the game in the browser at all. Project is under 20M, somewhere in the range of 17M, but some of the image sizes and/or actor sizes are larger than 512x512. Are these large image sizes or large actor sizes causing the web preview to crash because it is using HTML5 now?

in fact as its just css that pulls that bit in - remove the div id for launcher-ui
surely that can be implemnented for pro users - although it a sever side thing it could be that they have a html5 css for pro and for non pro and when your logged in and publish to html5 it can tell you pro and it will allocate it into that css side server

    just a thought

Just wanted to +1 the ability to export html5 version at the screen size that the project was created in.

eg. iPad project to Gamesalad arcade html5 at 1024x768
[although a folder export would be even better than being forced to serve it on gamesalad arcade:)]

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!! Would make a huge difference to our opportunities working with Gamesalad as a professional tool.

Any idea when the "null" bug will be fixed? I am going to have a new web game for my science curriculum done soon. It would be nice to publish it and have it on my site.

I've been having problems uploading my game to the arcade. The game is 5mb and plays well on the web preview mode. When I upload it though, GS arcade says that it's optimizing the game for the web and to check back in a few minutes. It still says the same thing two days later. I've tried reuploading and the same thing happens. Anybody have any ideas? Seems like the arcade isn't really working very well.

Heather please start your own thread on the proper category and explain your issue, if the problem is not with publishing to the arcade and instead of an issue with your game functioning. Thanks

In regards to publishing to the Arcade, is there a way I can make my game purchasable? Like, when I have finished making a game for windows, how could I upload it so that it's pay2play? I heard that I can't export my game as an exe file, and once the games on the arcade, it's obviously already up for free. Any help is appreciated. TY!

EDIT: I have the windows version, in case that makes the process any different. :)

Hey-- i am new to GS w/ Windows OS && am grateful for the software < "FREE" is an awesome price. > but he is a problem i am having... Quote: " At this time, we're only supporting 480 x 320 on GameSalad Arcade, but we're certainly looking to supporting other screen sizes/resolutions." and that's kewl, as it is your software-- however, the Portrait mode was set-up by the software in the "Create New" default settings and i didn't get a warning it would over-ride this when i published it. It got stretched of course and now i feel sad. Would be glad for a fix or a work around and thanks.
    kind regards, mark-p.
