Releasing a lite version without GS Pro

jb15jb15 Member Posts: 602
I'm considering releasing a version of Lefty with fewer levels, for free. The point would be get people to buy the full version, of course. I don't have pro, so I can't have a link to the full version in the game (no URL behavior). Upgrading isn't an option--so my question is, should I make a lite version, without the URL, or would nobody take the time to search the app store for it?

That's a good question, I did it with Sketch Ball without any links. It's hard to tell but I think I wouldn't be getting any sales without it. Maybe I'm wrong who knows.

I think I'll try it. I don't have anything to lose--having 0 sales, I'm not worried about hurting them. :)

Exactly, nothing to lose. Plus, you can gain a lot of valuable information just from a free app. See the numbers that are downloaded (and from which country). People may leave comments and give you feedback. etc.

Can't hurt to try. I had sales just through advertising without links, but most of those were for different apps all together. (I sell some apps aimed at toddlers. Whenever release a new one, I always advertise an older one. I always get a jump in sales of the older one. My assumption it is from the ad without the link, but it could be from them hitting "More from this same company" button in itunes. Hard to say.

I believe less and less are going to search in the app store, especially without an active link from an app. Times they are changing. In the distant past, people were used to searching out apps they wanted. In the recent past, they got used to hitting the link and going to the download page. The sad reality (especially for GameSalad users at the moment) is that now everyone just wants to hit the "upgrade" button. This is good in the long run. It's an impulse and instant gratification people an do while driving in their car. The sad thing is it's a feature GameSalad has on the road map still.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the tips y'all. I've just finished the lite version (it's amazing how much easier it is deleting scenes than creating them!) and have uploaded it to Apple. We'll see how it goes. Any sales are better than no sales, IMO. :)

really jb no sales at all? your game looks way better than a lot i have seen in n&n, this does worry me i am working hard on my first game and will suck not to get a least 100 sales, you have a nice game with a difference concept and still no sales.

like everyone else said i would just go for it, you got nothign to lose. And if i was playing a lite game and like it enough to buy the full version, i have no problem going into itunes to buy if theres no link. Ive played a couple light versions with no link.

Personally I feel that you HAVE to have iads in your free game. A good game will reach roughly 10 -30 dollars a day with iAds. You can make the pro membership back quickly. Also the linking feature is probably the best way to get more downloads/ sales.

Just another option to keep in mind:

If you publish a LITE version to GS Arcade (provided the game does not rely on motion controls - such as Accelerometer), you can go onto your game's page and add in "Platform Links" for its iOS location. This way, you can use your Arcade title as a promotional tool for your full iOS game.

I know we're currently working on a Cookbook video to explain this in further detail and it should be live early next week.

Yoda, can you add in Platform Links on the GS Arcade without having the Pro Version of Gamesalad?
