cannon type problem

hi there,
im new to gamesalad and very much impressed with it! i want to create a behaviour that its pretty much the same as the cannon example. ive looked through that and really just need someone to break it down and explain the steps. i dont want to just copy and paste it, id rather understand it!
in a bit more detail : i have a golfer actor. when press mouse he pulls back his club and the power starts to go up. when release mouse he does the swing thru animation and the ball is spawned and flies off. then when ball stops the golfer actor moves to where the ball is. the ball is destroyed, and we go back to square 1 again. ( its like a 2d golf game...) (and the golfer image includes the ball when hes preparing the shot.)
ive figured most of it out but i cant understand how to sort out the press/power raises until> release bit.
sorry for rambling explaination. any help would be great!!
