Questions about iPhone and web publishing

I've got a couple questions. First, when I publish a game to either web or iPhone, GS makes me login to their server first, I'm assuming to make sure I've bought a GS license. When it logs in does it go over SSL or is it sent in plaintext? I'm mostly wondering how secure it is to publish stuff from open wifi.

And when publishing games for iPhone, how come it still uploads the game to the GS server? It seems like that would only be necessary for web publishing. I'm just curious about this one.

The server is what converts the code. This is to keep 'hackers' from dissecting it & doing it for free =)
