Please help improve my shooting/throwing mechanic

The app I'm working on has a mechanic where you throw something into the air and then need to catch it (It is laid out like a Break Out game).

I tried a couple of techniques such as the Cannon template, but they never really worked as they were set up for landscape and my app is portrait, (and my attempts to compensate for this never seemed to work).

I ended up using T-ShirtBooths guide on targeting specific locations and most of the aspects work well, but once the actor is fired it heads to the location and then gravity takes effect and causes it to fall straight down. Can anyone help me figure out a way to make this part seem more natural?
