help with realistic behavior

Maybe someone can help me with my problem.
I'm looking for some realistic behaviors for parts of the wooden blockade shown in the movie below.
I have six parts which are spawned from the blokade during the shooting and I'm looking for some realistic behaviors for the spawned parts. Something like chopping the tree.
For now there are move for 0.1 s then accelerate downward but it doesn't look realistic or even nice.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

    Have you tried particles? It may help give it a more realistic effect. When a piece flies off, have a few (particles) smaller pieces (use pieces image just reduce size in particles) to sort of splinter off with it.
