What is Instance?

What is instance? How do we create it? And what it the useful instance? I searched in wiki but not able to find it. Please let me know.

    Every single actor you place in the scene becomes an instance of that actor. Once it becomes and instance you have to option to unlock the rules and you have an option to edit the instances self attributes to be different from the Prototypes values.
