Rip off games are always made by people who have no creativity or (sorry if this insults anyone) intelligence. A rip off game to me if the same exact game with different graphics or theme. Unless they add some new interesting features their game will come nowhere near to the professional game that was probably made by a big corporation like EA or Rovio.

    Just my opinion.

Is it a rip off or insperation? I'm a designer/animator and look everywhere for inspiration. I can pretty much design and animate anything and it seemed like games was the logical next step seeing how it involves everything I love. When I first started I jumped into Xcode and objective C and ripped apart every demo and free source project I could to help myself understand how it all worked. I'm not a great dev by no means, but I'm ambitious and inspired. When I found out about
Game salad I thought that this is great. I was really into mini gore at the time and loved the basic joystick top down style game play. So I set out to see if I could take the basic idea of a touch joystick controller and make a top down 3D looking game with gamesalad. After scouring the forums looking at different demos, and further understanding how far I could push the gamesalad engine I built Bot Blaster. (shameless plug ;) I feel that at its core it's much like mini gore, not as good, and maybe you would call it a ripoff. Either way to me it was a challenge, driven by a game I loved and the means to persue it was GameSalad. Thanks

Apple wasn't the first to use a GUI (Graphical Using Interface--mouse and icons instead of command prompt). They merely made a good GUI, fixed the problems past GUIs had had, and made it easy to use.

That said, I don't really like it when I come up with an original game, and then someone makes a AB clone and it gets around 100x downloads as mine.

To each his own. I don't actually have that much experience--and I don't have really high quality games like many devs do--but I plan to eventually.

Theres a big difference in Rip Off and Inspiration. Yes there are a lot of rip offs but really there are only so many base game types. So unless you are one of the super creative Game Designers who come up with completely new game types You have to look at other games you enjoy and that are successful and work from there. Take out what you don't like and what you think it lacked. You should always make it your own. Otherwise your no better than the schmucks that buy a template and just turn around and upload it as is.

agree to that there are only so many base game types that have developed over the years, and it's hard to come up with new types of game, but when it happens, usually it's Gold.

um on game template... I guess there are a few members here that makes them for a living, and I think it's a pretty cleaver move... Levis make his mark selling jeans to the gold miners... and some of us just keeps digging.

i'm actually considering buying one of those templates one of these days just to experiment to see how far i can take a template, but so far... i haven't been able to justify mimicking the more recent games... i have no problem ripping off old games.. since they are now mostly public domain..

but well said everyone i think... in a way we are all ripping off of each other in order to make something better. some of us more obvious than the other haha.
