the device laid flat and how to cope with the accelerometer

I have a minor problem and was wondering if others had a quick answer. Perhaps I already have an approach that will work but I haven't tried yet as am deep in other things for the totb3, but I am going in a few hours to have a go at it.

The device is flat, I am locked in landscape and using accelerometers to switch a lot of stuff through rules. I am wondering if to use the Z reading with a threshold to tie the actors to last stable rotational reading from X,Y vectored. The 'face up' screen attribute cuts in before the instability starts so perhaps a combination of face up and threshold of Z? Best approach? or other?

and possibly to interpolate to the new safe angle after a thresholded switch out of the safe state?

Input welcome.
