Working with GS as full time job?

Unfortunately I've got a job and have to go to work each day!

But... I notice quite a few people seem pretty prolific game developers on here. So I'm curious, are there people here who now develop GS games as their full-time work?

    temporarily to test the water.

    Hi Ultima,

So, how many games have you currently got out on the apps store to allow you to test the water in this way? It seems to me the more apps you have, generating a little income each, could be the way to go. Unless you have a big hit on your hands of course!

what I do is secret. I can tell you but i'd have to kill.. anyway.. generally speaking ... i started not too long ago but I think you win by quality and not quantity.. of course quantity helps but it's just not realistic when you start off.. just my thoughts.. others may have different experience.

income? pst.. haha. im generating about 1/10000 of what i'd be making if I am working full time for my day job yearly. Friends thinks i'm insane..

I think most people here started as part time anyway, and if you succeed the reward is well... priceless

It's my goal to start doing this full time but since I'm currently only making $50/month I can't really do that. lol

Ha ha, yeah - well I haven't even created anything yet but my friends and family think I'm insane for even making the effort! They just don't have the urge to create like I do!

I don't reckon I'll be giving up the day job though!
  • ultimaultima Member, PRO Posts: 1,207
haha, don't. I'm only testing this platform for about 3 month before I go back to my day job.. and will work on this as leisure.

    Hi BackUpAndDown,
No, its not enough to quit work - but still a nice little extra income though! Is that just off your 2 apps? I've just had a look, they look pretty good to me!
  • ultimaultima Member, PRO Posts: 1,207
not insane to make an effort that's for sure, and thanx for GS we are able to give this a shot, it's more fun than it looks... for me... i'd either be playing or paying for games if im not designing it and getting paid for it... that's my excuse.

Just to add another note.. what I make a month with apps now I can make in an hour.. but because I'm able to show my ability to make apps... my hour rate just doubled instantly. you see... we are not so insane after all.

p.s. the numbers mentioned are fully realistic.. but you get the idea.

Yup and I enjoy every minute of it. The $50/m is just from those two apps but I'm still trying to get a hang of the marketing side of game development so I'm hoping it will start making more once word gets out.

Thats impressive man! I hope I can do so well when I finally get to release something!

I think we all dream of a Grisly Manor - but I'd be very happy to start where you are. What marketing techniques have you tried?

Well when I first became a developer my main goal was to earn back the $100 I spent for the licence so I guess I'm doing alright. My next goal is to make enough to buy a iPad so that I can start making apps for that.

Right now all I've done for marketing is post here, post on the TouchArcade forums, make a Facebook page and upload a youtube trailer.

The 3 games I made with GameSalad have allowed me to quit my job last year and design games full time. So anything is possible!

You play them all under my profile here:

Great. Well I wish you all the best man! Sounds like its working well for you.

I'm just inspired by what an amazing opportunity we have to create games and reach a worldwide market for pretty much no expense whatsoever! GS has given me purpose haha.

Hey Firemaple. Yeah, I know - you're a legend around here! haha. Love your work, really inspires me to keep at it.

questio firemaple.. did you have past experience with game design? I feel as if most successful game designers have been doing it for a while or some sort of experience in similar field already.

As far as I know there are 4 types of devs here. Let me elaborate more:

1.-DEVS THAT DO THIS FOR A LIVING: this guys are GameSalad workaholics I got good friends here that are making over 5k each month on GameSalad games plus they sell some templates and stuff so some good months they earn over 6-7k... While it takes a lot of effort, knowledge and LUCK to hit the goldmine with a top 10 game. It only takes a lot of effort and knowledge to earn about 3-5k a month. But this wont happen over night. You need some time to get at least 10-12 games out there and cross promote them. Sure you can surpass the low thousands sales mark with just a couple of game, but if you want consistent earnings you need quite a few products in the Appstore. Let me clarify that by games I don't mean shovelware I mean games with amazing graphics, addictive gameplay, achievements and most important something fun that keeps you coming back for more.

2.- DEVS THAT DO THIS AS A SECOND JOB: on the second category we have guys that go to work their 9-5 and see GS as a good source of income but only develop about 4-5 hours a day and weekends. This are the guys that are trying to make it as a game maker but dont really want to take the full risk of quitting their jobs. if they happen to make more money with GS they will eventually become full time devs.

3.- HOBBYIST: This guys are here just for the fun (Cause gamemaking is fun right ?) they enjoy expressing their ideas in a game and they would love to see their creation being use by people around the globe. They really dont care if the make any money and they work on GS whenever they feel like.

4.- KIDS: There are lots of kids here in GS, which just show you how easy it is to use the tool and I'm definitely not saying that 13-15 yr old users cannot fall in any of the other categories mentioned above. There are a lot of guys here in their low teens trying to learn a lot and get some experience and who knows maybe make it big at a very young age. While sometimes if you are regular in the forum you can notice that some are not fully mature enough I sincerely applaud their interest and dedication. (at my low teens I was just chasing girls :) )

    @steve86

When you said Kids I was expecting you to start insulting us about how we make ripoffs and just want a quick buck. It brings tears to my eyes to know everyone here doesn't hate us. You made my day.

To stay on topic I do this as a hobby and just released my first a game a couple days ago for free. It has so far gotten around 2k downloads but I didn't get a penny for it. :(

anyone putting kids down these days is afraid of them haha... i just read an article yesterday about how the younger generation will be pushing the technology world forward tomorrow in the near future.. heck.. it's already happening.

    Back Up and down,

Your first game was good. I just say keep on doing it. Look at what already sells and make the quality just as good. Tell everybody about your app and keep trying.

  • WeswogWeswog Member Posts: 1,171
@Backupandown just keep trying and you will get there, I already make 150/m (without new apps coming out) and I love making apps so if you love it too, your wallet will get love :)

It's what I do for a living. I don't make enough to support myself doing just this, but I have other monetary input that allows me to do this full time without getting paid much from it. Not really in it for the money, but it's a nice perk when you get some. I always wanted to be a game developer ever since the day I found the easter egg in the Atari 2600 game "Adventure" back in 1979.
