how to tweak the official controller.

I am ready to create my first actual game.
I would like to use the official controller template but it doesn't work how I want.
I would like a thumb stick on the bottom left that moves my player actor left and right (and makes him face that direction too because he's going to have a gun) then I want A to shoot, and B to jump.
Simple right? well not for me.
