RTS Lite - possible?

Morning All,

Just a quick question as I'm about to embark on a new game and I'm looking into potential game engines.

I'm planning to make something along the lines of Cannon Fodder where you click to select a unit member and direct them to a spot. They will need to auto-retaliate if they're shot and attack if an enemy comes into range. I'll also need to add in power-ups, different enemy types... but thats for later on.

I know this is asking a lot but I want to know - first of all - is it possible to click and drag select actors and direct them to a position and if game salad has any sort of pathfinding potential!?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kris

Possible--well, I'm not going to say it's impossible. But--GS doesn't support tables/arrays yet, so if I were you I would definitely NOT do a RTS in GS. I believe arrays are expected in the fall. You might at least wait till then.

    Hey jb,

Thanks for the reply - fall's not too long away at least... So right now theres not pathfinding equivalent. Might be heading back to unity then...

    Thanks again,

Good luck with Unity. Some incredible games have been made with that engine.

Hope to see you in the fall, though. :)

Tables and arrays are listed on the roadmap as coming in Winter... which could mean anything up to March next year.

Hopefully it'll be sooner, but I wouldnt hold your breath.

Hey, thanks for your thoughts - perhaps this idea isn't best suited for GS but I like the product and want to give it a decent crack as I'm definitely a designer not a coder!

I'm thinking platformer or scrolling shooter maybe, something like zombies ate my neighbours...

The lite will have to wait till the next game maybe!

Honestly, reading your description, you certainly *could* do it in GameSalad - there's nothing there really that hasn't been done before.

Selecting a unit and moving it - pretty easy.

Retaliating when enemy is near - use Magnitude, or even just an invisible actor around the player that denotes a 'vision' zone.

    Powerups - yep - easy.

New enemies - again, not a biggy.

Now, a full blown RTS - *that* might be problematic - but what you describe wouldn't be too hard if you know what you're doing ;)

    Cheers,

    QS :D

    Hey 'sheep,

That's interesting, thanks for your post. This'll be my first game but it's obvious there's a very active community here so I think I'm gonna go for it!

I think my mistake here was titling this post with 'rts' as it's not really - it's more of a click, select, move to point tactical game... Let's see how I get on!

Thanks again all, will start a post and a blog, keep you all, well, posted!
