Press Release Necessary?

After becoming interested in gamesalad, I've decided to learn what it takes to make this iphone app thing really happen. I'm currently just learning as much as i can about it and the whole education process has actually been fun but there are still some learning gaps and questions. One question is about press releases. Are they really necessary? I've learned that Apple gives you promotional tools like "promo codes" and there is the whole social networking world that specifically caters to iphone apps that an individual could use for promoting. Is it necessary to have a press release? Some people say yes others say no. I would like to know what people on this site think compared to the rest of the internet.

Well I have published 5 apps to the App Store since starting with GameSalad a little over a year ago, and while I'm not a billionaire (yet) I have never done a press release. Although it probably wouldn't hurt you to do one, I've never gotten around to doing it and my apps have been somewhat successful without a press release. Just my two cents.

Holy crap Jon, maybe I should start doing press releases! Just out of curiosity, was it free to post it on prmac, and did you get a professional to write it for you or did you write it yourself.

The info is great. Thanks so much for the help. My next question is where can I go to get a well prepared press release done? Also, is there a place where I can learn to do a professional or close to professional press release myself and get it published to 6700 like "jonmulcahy"?

Press releases can't hurt! Marketing is always iffy, and difficult to track results, but I think for $20, it's worth a shot! you can get reviews this way, and more exposure, but it's not a guaranteed boost in sales.

i just used prmac, $20 for the press release, and they send it out to a ton of places. I was wrong though, it was VIEWED over 8400 times, but I don't know if that was different places.
