An instance is what your actor becomes once its is placed in a scene. You may here is in reference to scene attributes because only an unlocked instance can access the attributes of the scene or other instances within a scene.

Typically, an "instance" is an example of an actor in a scene that has been edited to differ from the original prototype actor. This is done by clicking on the actor after it has been placed in the scene, "unlocking" the actor, and making changes.

There are some advantages to this - for example, you can create multiple copies of an actor with some minor changes between them, such as the background clouds moving at different speeds, without having to completely redo all of the rules associated with an actor or cluttering up your actor box with dozens of similar actors.

However, keep in mind that an "instanced" actor will only act the way it does for the scene it is in.
