Having to start over each time you play (Like Pac-Man)

I was just thinking, those old games like Pac-Man or Mappy didn't save your highest level reached--you had to start over each time you played it. Of course, that was because it was an acrade game, with hundreds of players (imagine that many save slots!).

My question is: Would a game like that do well today? Where your hiscore is saved--even maybe on GameCenter, to compete with friends--but you have to start back at 0 each time you play--would that be frustrating, or is there potential there?

What do you guys think?

My next game depends on this. These games are just the games where you try & beat your best score, no big deal.

Lefty is sort of like this. Let's say you're on level 16 and click level one to show someone how to play, it doesn't save that you were on 16 and says you're only on level 1. By the way, Lefty is ADDICTING :D

Wait a second--what Lefty are you referring to? My game? It's supposed to save your level...

I love those games, however you need a highly replayable game. If it has any kind of puzzle elements, I might not want to do the levels over and over but if it has a lot of pattern gameplays, I will reach further and further each time. For example a game like Tiny Balls it would be very bad because it has some luck factor, lot of levels and it's puzzlish. This model is usually better for shmup.

You know, the unlimited lives and checkpoints are modern design because it's less frustrating.
