Illustrator Confusion

Alright this isn't exactly about gamesalad but until know I've always used gimp to give my images a transparent background, however whenever I create an image with illustrator and then open it with gimp to add transparency nothing happens, (yes I saved all my files under png) Basically my question is how to convert a color into transparency in illustrator, yes I realize that you can do it with the pen tool but that would be rediculous considering that most of the images are text and it would be painstaking to trace around, if anybody knows it would be beast if you could tell me its pretty important

what version of illustrator are you using? when you export as png, there's a option that allows you to choose transparency as background no need to use any other program. just make sure you don't have a "white" color fill/box where you want the transparency.
