Working better at night?

Hey all, just noticed something really interesting, over the last few weeks I have been struggling to get much work done on one of my apps even though I have had plenty of free time to work on it especially in the day as the weather in England has been terrible :/ This evening/morning (1.23am in UK) Im working ridiculously fast and efficiently, I have also found this to be the case on other long nights...Im wondering why?

I put it down to a few reasons;

Not many people on Facebook to chat to.
No new news content is being published (always checking sites for new content!)
No distractions in the home (everyone is asleep)

Anyone else have the same experiences and if so why do you feel that you do so?

Cheers.

I have a 3 year old, so the only time I have uninterrupted time is at night. I would prefer to work during the day, I think my mind is sharper, but I have no choice. Night it is!

Seem to hear that from the GameSalad community, children make a big bearing on your hours! Im sixteen but like to do sports and hang out with mates in the day and in the evening I like to just relax, night is when the coding comes ;)

    Cheers.

I love working at night! Sometimes the best ideas occur at 3am :) And meshed with a glass of Pinot Grigio, or Riesling, what more could you ask for? :)

I thought I it was bad staying up till 2am! But I can't sleep in with the kiddo so I'm up at 7am no matter what time I go to sleep.

@butterbean no wine, just coffee in those wee hours! Wine would give me the giggles.

I'm also a big time night owl. I find that once the kids are in bed, then I get my best work done. Like others, I often work til 3 or 4 am. Still nights are the best working conditions.

Yeap nighttime works for me the best too. I work full time, have a wife and baby so at night is when I can concentrate on developing the best. Unfortunately that's also usually my console gaming time so I usually have to choose between the two.

I can't do the wine at night though, it would put me to sleep hardcore, haha, so it's green tea and water for me.

At night but only because I am not distracted by phone calls etc.
When it rains I work better too because it is quieter around my house. No screening kids in the street etc.

I used to spend a lot of late nights working but now try to cut it down and get up early instead if I can. There are time when I find myself working until very late, but creeping tiredness and shifting sleep patterns take their toll, and I find that sleep is an important part of keeping on the ball.

Early morning do have the same quiet as late at night and by the time the phone starts going I often have 4 hours of good work done. I also find that lying in bed in the early morning after a good night's sleep can throw new light on problems, and often solutions are obvious with a fresh brain.

But as I mention... I still do end up working late.

:-) I've often seen QS about in the Forums at 2 in the morning; I suffer (suffer?) from insomnia so I'm often awake at that time myself. I find that my "creativity" starts at about 10 o' clock in the evenings.

(I've always been a night person. When I had my own graphic design business, more than 3 times I worked 24 hours practically non-stop. Wiped me out for a few days after though. And in my "wild" youth, used to stay up all night as well. Didn't care, me... ;-)

    I hear you sir.

I don't sleep unless I have to - as in, if I am just too knackered to carry on.

It's just a waste of time otherwise, right? :)

Same with me. I've been finding that going to bed early and getting up around 2 or 3 is a lot more productive than staying up all night. Can't do like I did when I was in my 20's, gotta have that sleep now.

Getting older kinda sucks. It's really not too bad though, I'll start worrying when I catch myself in line at the Howard Johnson's dinner buffet at 4:30 in the afternoon.
