ball bounces straight up and down

I have a ball and paddle game and most of the time the ball moves about the screen the way it should. But occasionally the ball will move straight up and down and no matter with which part of the paddle I hit the ball, it just keeps moving straight up and down. How can I fix this problem? Is there a way so depending on which part of the paddle the ball hits, it alters it's trajectory?
