I had someone ask about a game idea...and it led me to think about Tetris and whether it has been attempted before?

I can see there would be lots of constrained square blocks to build up the shapes....

Anyone ever attempted it?

Don't see why it would be impossible very tricky yes but not impossible.

Constraining blocks to build interesting shapes would be the killer.

Just some thoughts on it...( it would be a lot of work...)

you'd need to set up some numbered grid system but it wouldn't need to be too big...maybe 10 x 20 points.

blocks dropping in and direction controlled by user...that would be fine

if a grid point is in contact with a block actor when that actor is no longer falling, mark it as activated, if all grid squares on that row are activated then tell all blocks on that row to be destroyed and in game physics could move all the rows down. And add points to the score....

piece of cake... .... he he he he

any other major gameplay I'm missing? rotating?

As soon as we have better collision shapes this will be a piece of cake. Im not sure i'd bother before hand.

    Tetris is copyrighted right?
It is illigal to recreate it?

I don't think they can copyright the game mechanic itself.

You can make a knock off, but you can't call it Tetris.

He seemed so and humble I was glad he got something in the end thanks to another man who's name I can't remember.

I think it would be possible, not easy.
Someone should attempt it ? Someone who has been using GS for a long time and is well experienced.

I created Commove, which is a puzzle game that is in the same genre as Tetris. It certainly was difficult without arrays, but not impossible. How I created Commove is explained in The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook

Maybe I should make a template to show how a game like this can be done, and then sell it on the Marketplace. Are people interested in this?
