Question about Inkscape: Alpha Channel

I could ask this question on an Inkscape forums, but I'm too lazy to make an account on one, and the solutions Google brings up have to do with the Windows version of Inkscape, so I'll just ask here.
I have the background set with an alpha of 0, but when I export as PNG the background isn't transparent. How do you export as PNG while keeping the alpha channel?
