Adobe illustrator and adobe photoshop are probably the best. There are some free ones too. Gimp, inkscape, blender 3d.

what tool do i need to become a good mechanic? hum.. i've always wondered... haha sorry man.. just a joke.

you can use anything but vector based such as illustrator will be easier for you to start with.free ones... or cheap ones are for the most part limiting... you can download illustrator as trial for 30 days... you can also find trial of previous version which adds another 30 days, CS2, cs3, cs4, cs5 that's half year already... and soon cs6 will be out... but finding older versions are a bit tricky... but anyway if you want free... better dig deep.

I have lately been using increasingly simple graphics with stronger and stronger effect. Design doesn't have to be complex or even done in a graphics program, but with partial or whole design/layout/generative graphical effects in GS. K.I.S.S. can work.
