just bought the Apple developer license and am waiting for my email which I guess has some activation code? Do I have to set this up and get all the certificates sorted before I can buy the GS and run the viewer?

You can buy GS now or even later, as you can develop to your heart's content for free. When you want to publish to GameSalad's website or to the iPhone, you will need one of the two yearly packages, Express ($99/year) or Professional ($1999/year). But to actually install anything on the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad in general, you will need a developer's certificate, which is part of the iPhone Developer's Program for $99/year.

Sorry - do you need to 'buy' an apple licesne? I thought that side of things was free? Thought it was just the $99 a year for Gamesalad?

@sam: No, you will need both.

$99/year to Apple to join the iPhone Developer Program. This allows you to install things on your device, as well as give you access to create all the provisioning profiles and development certificates that you need.

$99/year to GameSalad as well. This will allow you to publish apps as well as install the incredibly useful GSViewer on your device so you can instantly, wirelessly test your games.

The great thing about all of this is that GameSalad is completely free to try out and learn. You can publish games to GameSalad.com to your heart's content. Only when you're ready to make an app, do you have to pay.

$200/year is an extremely low barrier to entry to make apps for the iPhone/Touch. And a fairly low financial goal to set for yourself as well. You just need to make at least $200 to break even. And you can make as many apps/games as you want to!

I cannot tell you how exciting it is to see one of your creations running on an actual iPhone. It is truly a rush!

Considering you could spend thousands on one app easy.

Thanks firemaplegames - not complaining about the pricing at all (as you say, its very cheap), just was not aware of the charges from Apple - I thought I had signed up for free, but obviously not signed up to the right part?!

you signed up to the Apple Developer Program, which is free. Through ADC you get XCode, and a ton of tutorials, etc.

You need to sign up with the iPhone Developers Program...
